Picking up from where DUI Costs: How Much Does a DUI in Alabama Cost? (Pt. 1) left off, here, we will resume our discussion of the financial obligations people will have after being convicted of drunk driving in the state of Alabama.

While the first part of this blog series focused on discussing DUI costs for first-time DUI convictions, here, we will take a closer look at these costs for subsequent DUI convictions.

DUI Costs for Second DUI Convictions in Alabama

  • DUI costs increase significantly when people are convicted a second or third time of drunk driving in Alabama. Call us to minimize the risk of conviction and the associated DUI costs.Court DUI fines – With a second (or any subsequent) DUI conviction, the court fines will generally increase substantially. In addition to a $100 court fee that goes directly into the Impaired Drivers Trust Fund, other court DUI costs can range from $1,000 to as much as $5,000. Generally, the circumstances of the case (such as, for instance, the person’s BAC at the time of his arrest) will dictate where the court fines fall in this broad range.
  • Driver’s license reinstatement DUI costs – The costs for reinstating a driver’s license after a DUI conviction will typically be the same as those for first-time DUIs as long as a person’s license was suspended, rather than fully revoked. To reinstate a suspended license after a DUI conviction, the DUI costs will be $275.
  • Alcohol education program costs – When people have been convicted of a second, third, etc. DUI, they will be sentenced to attend alcohol education classes as part of the terms of their sentence, and this typically means that they have to enroll in a “level 2” program at state-approved programs. The costs to enroll in a level 2 alcohol education program in Alabama are $379 as of November 2014.
  • Car-related costs – While covering the costs of towing a vehicle may still apply for subsequent DUIs, the most significant vehicle-related DUI costs that people will have to cover are the expenses associated with the installation, maintenance and monitoring of ignition interlock devices. Although these costs vary from vendor to vendor, the average cost for one year of ignition interlock service (including installation costs) is roughly $500 to $800.

We will wrap up this discussion regarding DUI costs in the upcoming conclusion to this blog series – be sure to check it out!
