How to Avoid a DUI Arrest over Memorial Day Weekend

On Behalf of | May 20, 2015 | DUIs

With the Memorial Day weekend just around the corner, many people are planning festive celebrations. If part of your celebration plans involve drinking alcohol, then make sure you plan ahead to avoid a DUI arrest, as there will likely be a lot more Alabama law enforcement officials out this weekend looking to nab drunk drivers.

Avoiding a DUI Arrest: Here’s What You Can Do

Here’s what you can do to avoid a DUI arrest over Memorial Day weekend (or anytime), a trusted Montgomery DUI attorney explains.

Here’s what you can do to avoid a DUI arrest over Memorial Day weekend (or anytime), a trusted Montgomery DUI attorney explains.

Some of the things you can do to avoid a DUI arrest this weekend (and anytime) include:

  • Designate a sober driver – Do you have a friend or family member going to the same party as you are this weekend? If so, try to get a ride with someone who will not be drinking alcohol at the party.
  • Plan another mode of transportation – If no one you know will be going to the party or if no one you know plans on staying sober, then start figuring out another way to get home. Consider calling a cab, planning a route via public transportation, etc.
  • Plan to stay somewhere for the night – If getting a ride seems to be going nowhere, then consider making plans to stay the night somewhere. Ask a friend if you can stay on his couch or maybe even book a motel/hotel room for the night. Although this may be a bit more costly than taking a cab, it will still be far than the costs of a DUI (which can cost at least $10,000 for a first-time conviction).
  • Keep the party at home – If getting a ride and staying somewhere else don’t seem to be working out, then why not keep the party at your place? If you do, you won’t have to worry about driving or getting home when the party’s over.

The Bottom Line: A Little Planning Can Go a Long Way…

When it comes to avoiding a DUI arrest, the bottom line is that the old adage – an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure – certain rings true.

So, if you know you will be out drinking alcohol this weekend (or any time), do yourself a favor and do some planning upfront… because if you wait until after the party ends to try to figure out a way home, you may end up making the poor choice of getting behind the wheel, putting yourself at risk of a DUI arrest.
